I expect they just store them for auditing/regulatory purposes. Also heard that Vanilla Visas don't work 100% of the time for identity verification, but worked for me

Just sharing this because I thought it was interesting - I've been under the impression it's impossible to set up a burner phone number without identification but it turns out you can.

    1. Get some cash. Up to you to do that anonymously.
    2. Go to Coles and buy a Vanilla Visa (I'd suggest at least $50 so you can recharge the SIM several times) and a $2 Lebara SIM, paying in cash. If you're feeling paranoid about CCTV cameras, congratulations: it's still COVID season, you can wear a mask.
    3. Set up a throwaway email address, e.g. ProtonMail, that you can use when activating.
    4. Go to the Lebara activation page. They don't block TOR, so ideally you should use that to avoid creating obvious links between you and the account. Sign up using a fake name, fake address and your throwaway email - avoid stupid or creative names, just make up something boring.
    5. When asked to verify your identity, there should be an option to verify via credit card. Use your Vanilla Visa and the fake name you've picked.
    6. Select a plan. Their cheapest is $14.90 a month, and will auto-recharge until your card runs out of credit. You can always add a new prepaid visa if you need.
    7. Remember, your location is relatively traceable via cell towers, so remove the SIM (or deactivate it if you trust your phone) when you're not using it.
    8. Don't use this number to do anything illegal, that would be morally wrong.

Copypastas aside, koalas really are awful.

Time to build a koala killing guillotine railgun

Really depends if we're talking about the a priori existence of shame (in which case aldra has it right) specifically related to our actions, or the phenomenon of carrying around shame (which is mostly just mental illness / fear / not good for you) and having it prevent normal/healthy interactions.

Either way, most people have the wrong amount of it

Even if they deserve it, gossiping and spreading that info throughout the office is a red flag. A quiet word, without judgment, to your boss is one thing. Gossiping, yeah, well you've now taught me two things: the drug user is unreliable and you're untrustworthy. Anybody I've managed who acted like that did themselves no favours.

I should look into that ^ I just use rectangle (previously spectacle), which tied keyboard shortcuts to various window layout / tiling combinations

step 1. like someone said above, lay off the drugs. If you do anything, do it on weekends
step 2. get a consistent sleep schedule. Wake up by 6:30am at the latest, go to bed eight hours before
step 3. take ownership/accountability at work. Don't be one of those useless fucks obsessed with whose fault or responsibility things are, be the person who gets shit done
step 4. advertise. No point working your ass off if people don't know about it. Takes practice to do this without looking like a suckup or a narcissist, but try not to be too autistic and you'll figure it out
step 5. persist. Doing this for a few days or a few weeks won't get you anywhere. Grind, for years
step 6. push yourself out of your comfort zone. New job, new role, whatever. Do harder and bigger things.

If you pick the right industry and do this right you will end up with plenty of money. It may not make you any happier.

Learning assembly is like learning how to make wheels or mill flour. At some point "learning the fundamentals" needs to have a practical cutoff point.

I'd second learning python. It's easy, which is not a bad thing. It's flexible, so if you're not sure where you want to apply your skills you have a lot of different options. I've built home automations, webservices for work, open source tools, and plenty of stupid experimental shit all in python.

If you're looking for a corporate job go learn java or something. I don't love java that much but it'll get you work.

Basically that. Linux desktops are fun if you want to fuck around but if you're working I'd rather just have the OS get out of my way.

Speaking of the broader question of this thread, I'm required to travel internationally for work. I would take it anyway but technically speaking I have no choice unless I want to find another job

That's assuming she has a broken heart. Hard to imagine a 70 year relationship between people in a singularly unique position would be anything remotely resembling normal. They might not even like each other, or they might have only really interacted in public like two coworkers seeing each other at the office.

Wouldn't be surprised if she goes on fine. Though at her age, not long for this world either way.
