Except it is an over reaction. Again, take the mugging case. I think mugging is wrong. However I don't feel the need to continually post for 40 pages about how evil muggers.

"the majority of sane people" don't take it upon themselves to try and right the wrong of the world by telling people how evil they are on the internet, but you do. So why the special attention here? The diddling hyopthesis seems like a prime candidate.

She wants to sacrifice you in a blood ritual.

And no I wasn't diddled when I was a kid and the other parasites are just as bad especially Matt.

What, so it's the thought that counts? Uh oh sophie, you better not think those unclean thoughts! You're a sicko if you have the impure thoughts, regardless of what you actaully do with your life or how you conduct yourself! But don't worry, we have Jorell to play the thought police and shame you into only liking the things he thinks it's OK to like.

Also you missed the point of my post. There are plenty of things just as bad or worse to get angry over but this is the thread you really seem to be getting riled up about. Why? You're clearly personally invested here in a way you aren't with most of the perceived wrongs of the world, and the simple explanation would seem to be that your investment is in the form of chilhood trauma.

Tell me Jorell, what is your relationship with your father like?

Hmmm, tough call, lots and lots of ways to abuse children but for me I'd say it's a tie between being raised in a capitalist society and American primary/secondary education.

Forcing kids to memorize timestables is particularly heinous.

It's kinda annoying but really the software should handle long thread titles better. Also it's half baked ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I bet you get mad at people for "virtue signaling" when you feel the need to explode in moral outrage on an internet forum because some guy on the other side of the planet likes something you don't think it's OK to like.

Yeah, themes (which is the only way you're getting a space background because that shit's getting relegated to a non-default theme. Especially if it's animated) have been on the todo list for a long time now and I've made a couple stabs at it but haven't gotten very far. Think I even told you (Enter) that I was going to see about working on it in the next week like months or years ago. Ooops.

CSS is kinda fiddly work, it can be kinda fun at times but also super tedious at others. There have also been issues beyond motivation getting in the way. I deliberately designed the code with only a minimal consideration towards multiple themes because that's a cheap way to get UI changes out the door faster and in the early days when the codebase was under heavy development and also deployed in production it was one of the least important things (remember, the site didn't have subscriptions, private messages, or admin tools worth a damn when we first moved over from vB). Also every theme you add means each UI change requires another test case (or realistically speaking requires me pushing it to prod while drunk and waiting to see what it broke). Also also theme support is a little wonky in the setup I have, surprisingly it took some fairly deep magicks to produce separate themes that were relatively well optimized.

AAAAAnyway, even though I said something similar last time, I did make some progress on the themes front this weekend and am hoping (although not promising) to get the site's second theme up by the end of next weekend. Probably going to be something taking influence from print media and a lot less colorful than the current one, mostly because I think this site looks a bit suspicious when I'm reading it at work. But once those kinks are worked out a space theme hopefully won't be too hard. PoC image, know it looks like hot shit right now but it's actually significant:

IN FACT if you have any CSS skills you could help write your space theme RIGHT NOW on this feature branch: https://github.com/RyanJenkins/ISS/tree/themes

I know you won't, but I get to revoke your license to complain if you're unwilling to help.

Sophie has code that's running right now, aldra has threatened to contribute and I would love to see that happen, I'm sure he's capable of it if he can muster the motivation to dive into a mid sized codebase, contribution to which carries next to no potential of monetary or reputational reward.

Mostly I point it out because people tend to take "if you want this feature you can go write it yourself" better than "no, I'm not going to take time out of my day to add your stupid feature". But also a little bit because I think self taught programmers stand to benefit a lot from jumping into a codebase they didn't start and going through the process of understanding it. There's a big difference between doing tutorials or writing personal projects and working in a codebase that has a live deployment and involves working with other developers. Exposure to that can be kinda scary (it was for me) but it's a valuable experience and I'd be happy if I could help someone over that particular hurdle.

You guys really know how to make a good bug reports, lots of details and stuff, it's always a total breeze to reproduce the issue you folks report and debugging is always a pleasure.

Not quite sure, does that mean they damage other people's property and deny responsibiltiy for it? If so then fuck that guy, child molesters are the worst!

Which is a good place to segue into the vulnerability policy I added to the about page a couple of weeks ago:

I encourage any poster who's interested in doing so to experiment with the site software as long as it doesn't break the above two rules. If you find and exploit a security vulnerability you will neither be banned for it, nor will I pursue legal action except in the case that the exploit is used to do exceptional damage to me or the site (I really can't even think of what could measure up to this standard seeing as the data held is pseudonymous). I take this position both because I don't think people should be punished for curiosity or for taking advantage of what is ultimately my mistake, and because I hope that by doing so I can convince you to disclose any vulnerability you find so that I can patch it. If you do disclose a vulnerability I will happily credit you with its discovery and may even provide a small reward.

Depends on what you mean by "hack". There was a bug in the video embedding code that would cause an exception to be thrown when an particular kind of malformed URL was provided. When this happened it would terminate template rendering as a safety precaution against XSS attacks, causing the blank pages you saw. So yes, this qualifies as a hack as it exploits the software to do something that wasn't intended. No data was compromised or lost however, threads just rendered wonky until it got fixed. Discovery was almost certainly accidental.
