    You also could've just bought one of these to load full of charcoal/wood chips/wood pellets and insert this in the middle of your propane grill (between the burners) to give your food that charcoal grill/wood smoke taste without buying a second grill.

    You had your setup all wrong anyway. You should've set up the grill for indirect heat (light one burner, leave the other burner off) and place those brats and dogs on the upper grilling rack furthest from the lit burner.

    Also score your brats/dogs with a knife or poke it with a fork to prevent bursting when they swell during cooking.

    I saw you got a new (to you) charcoal grill. You'll wanna cook the same way. Pile coals on one side of the grill to leave an area for indirect cooking.

    Brats/dogs can be finished completely on the indirect side.

    Burgers, steaks, chicken should be cooked to temp on indirect side and then final flame grill them directly over heat source for a few minutes while watching and rotating sides to give a good char.
