Honestly, I don't think the author even proposes this as explanatory, but I feel like:The Kursk P.R. gambit is set to massively fail. Essentially, the Ukrainian forces are moving away from their lines of communication and supplies into Russian territory. A parallel can be made with what happened to Field Marshall von Paulus at Stalingrad when the German Army became overextended.
Is the best explanation. They created an opportunity for Ukrainian forces to overextend themselves on a massive scale with the hopes of winning a decisive victory that could end the conflict. The donbass shit was going nowhere fast, a back and forth slog, a slow meat grinder. "Create a massive opening on our border and let the Ukrainians pour through it en masse, then isolate and destroy them" is some seriously Sun Tzu ass shit though. -

he should have :
1- recognize the independence of LDNR.
2- fast track these 2 new allies into CSTO. doesnt matter if the motion was approved in time or not, its the intention that mattered.
3- wait patiently for AFU to launch their attack on LDNR just like how the US waited for 9/11 and pearl harbor before that. sure, some civilians will die, but i dont think they are going to die more than they are dying in the current SMO.
4- if and when the AFU started to attack LDNR russia can either summon the collective "peace" keeping force of the CSTO or go alone to defend LDNR.
5- of course they will be blow back and russians/LDNR are going to blame putin and russian intelligence for failing to detect and prevent an attack on LDNR, which putin can easily apologize by saying he was wrong to have acted in good faith that the rapid accension of LDNR into the CSTO alone was enough to prevent such an occurence.
6- go all out/in a full blown war instead of half assed SMO.
7- deny any hostile country all energy export.
8- accept nothing less than unconditional surrender. -

its really easy to understand and summarized if one remembers that scene from the fight club where the AHX guy was conversing with a well spoken and well behaved negress about doing recalls.
its a simple bussiness equation.
if "kidnapping" kursk as a ransom for the return of LDNR takes fewer manpower and machinery to conduct than defending and taking back these lost territories from the russians, then the rational is simply to take kursk and held it as long as possible and hope for a negotiated exchange.
im not saying that it will work or rational but i can understand this could be the reasoning for someone who came up with this idea.
