   The US ran a coup back in 2014 deposing the Ukrainian government in order to put an anti-Russian figurehead in place.
   
   Large regions in the East, who are majority ethnic-Russian, refused to accept it and tried to break away from the new state.
   
   The new government immediately tried to take them back by force, using both the regular military and poorly-disciplined mercenaries who are guilty of very, very serious crimes (again, see CYCLONE BATTALION).
   
   The government agreed to a ceasefire and negotiations back in 2016 (the Minsk Agreements), but never actually followed through and have been trying to retake those regions militarily ever since.
   
   Attacks on the breakaway regions have escalated to attempts of literal extermination and genocide. Russia intervened to protect those regions, given that in the days leading to the intervention, the UAF was firing almost 2000 artillery shells into the region DAILY.
   
   Russia's original plan was likely just to support the Eastern regions with artillery or rocket fire, but literally the day before the operation the Ukrainian president went on TV and openly said he intended to start building nuclear weapons (which the Ukraine is actually capable of being part of the former Soviet Union).

    He refused to reconcile with the Eastern regions and actively tried to wipe them out.
    
    He is attempting to join and host weapons for an alliance against Russia when his border is literally 300km or so away from Moscow. For reference, modern ballistic missiles can make that distance before the launch is even detected.
    
    He refused to negotiate with Russia or the breakaway regions on the matter.
    
    
    He created a situation where Russia felt they had to step in in order to prevent a genocide.
    
    regardless of whether or not the current Russian operation is excessive, they have a good reason for it - much better than justification than US involvement in any of their wars in the last 20 years or so.

    Does the US just sit by as all their expats there get wiped out? Does the US just sit there as Russia starts to move strategic weapons into Mexico proper?

    for the last time, Russia reactivated two armored brigades. They were disbanded during the Warsaw Pact era because NATO guaranteed Russia that the Ukraine (and the other ex-Soviet states) would be left neutral and neither side would station weapons there.
    
    Thanks to the 2014 coup and the Ukraine's attempted ascension to NATO, it is no longer considered neutral.
    
    The new armored units aren't stationed 'on the border' either; they're roughly halfway between the border and Moscow. I don't believe they're participating in the operation anyway.

    I have to admit that I agree with DTE. They don’t have to stay there, they want Russian rule, go to Russia. I’m more concerned about the Ukrainian citizens than Russia and it’s separatists.
