Except that the separatist rebels in Ukraine were counter-rebels. Kyiv had a revolution and overthrew the democratically elected president. Crimea and Donbass didn't want anything to do with the new, undemocratic and unelected regime, so had their own elections and voted to go their own way.
Kyivian Ukrainians have been seething ever since.

some Russian ex-soldiers joined the rebels but not in any official capacity; many had family across the border they were willing to fight with/for
the Spetsnaz were deployed to the Crimea to lock it down and make sure the secession referendum went down, but it's never been shown they were anywhere else.

No they were arming them and pretending to be rebels aldra. They found evidence of this. Because Ukraine military would have rolled through them without russian weapons and help on such a scale and many russian soldier spouring in with rebel clothing. I believe eu news was covering this when i was in prison extensively.
