Just because an action is consequential doesn't mean there was any forethought behind it.

Yeah, that was from before Soleimani was killed - the thing that prompted the flare-up initially was *someone* fired off a few 107mm KATYUSHA-type rockets at the K1 airbase killing 2 Iraqi soldiers and a US contractor. An Iraqi unit was sent to investigate where the rockets came from and they found that truck which was assumed to be the launch site, and the media used the presence of unfired Iranian 107mm rockets to claim an Iranian connection (even though they flood Iraqi and Syrian battlefields and the batch numbers match those found in SDF stores).

I think the Iranians were right and the plane did initially suffer engine failure. This forced the plane to turn around and try to emergency-land, but for whatever reason they weren't able to communicate with the tower so the SAM complex operators assumed it'd been hijacked.

The U-turn back toward the airport has been confirmed via flight records and the U-turn happened after their last transmission (they did not or could not report to the tower), so it's likely that whatever failure the plane suffered caused issues with its communications systems.

The timing is highly suspicious but unless evidence comes out that the plane was hijacked or sabotaged, it seems like an unfortunate cascade of events at the worst possible time.

How about their communications were intentionally jammed?

doesnt make sense. terrorism doesnt happen in a terror sponsoring state, just doesnt.

and has the flight data been released ?

edit : its perfectly reasonable for the plane to turn around because ukraine is located on the east. need to find previous flight path for the flight.

it's possible but completely without evidence at the moment

Yeah Ukraine has a copy but it hasn't been decoded or analysed yet as I understand it. They're still trying to organise an international investigation team.

actually there are two, one for the flight data and the other for voice records. would be interested to hear the voice recordings.

This is interesting because I just read a few articles about the IRGC commander that gave the order to shoot it down - he says he had to make the call personally because there were 'communications issues' and he couldn't verify with his superiors.

Actually he's just the commanding officer of the overall air force in Iran.

The actual idiot who launched the missile hasn't been named, but must be feeling pretty pessimistic about his future right about now.

The buck stops with commander and chief. Just like over here.
