A lot of them hit the cement support abutment at the bottom, too, and explode. Some hit the steel girder just under the bridge, and that knocks them out and they drown. -

Saltwater is more buoyant than fresh water. I rose to the top right away, and the currents pushed me to shore. -

right.. it's hard water. which is what knocks you out. and yes.. most of them seem to be jumping from close to the Spans which have a concrete base. they should walk out to the middle which is also the highest point of the road and walkway. but about 8 feet higher.
nothing to hit on the way down unless a cruise ship just happens to come along. most of the traffic has to wiggle it;'s way under the bridge anyays.. there is a rock that sunk a big ass ship in the 1800s and they have guide ways and boeys to guide traffic. but I don't think that rock is directly under the roadway. -
