'average' isnt saying much
i could go on all day about stories of dumb asses with weapons that are 'average.'
dumb nigger with a full-auto 5.56x45 'forgetting' to release the trigger and filling the overhead bullet-traps with rounds until the belt ran out. same nigger muzzle-sweeping an entire range of shooters. moron trying to shoot .380 rounds out of a 9mm then when chastised about it stating 'but they fit.' moron loading a magazine with the rounds in backwards.
even above-average isnt really saying much. i recall an argument between myself and a CCW instructor in front of a class about how glocks dont have hammers

Or you can carry something bigger if you're not a little bitch, something like an M1-A or a .308 AR but buying ammunition will put you in debt.
Seriously though just get an SKS, it's relatively cheap but it'll last and actually get you in to shooting, a spam can isn't cheap but it'll last a new shooter a while and the SKS can run with them, the main plus is you can go unnoticed because it isn't black. -

they range in price/quality from some used shit-box chinese version to high-end ones that are as of high quality as any decent firearm -

Fit it with a bumpfire stock and you're in business. And don't be a bitch, machine the fuck out of the stock, put a spring in it so it does the firing work for you. -

I mean, it depends on the State/Province. And the MAGPUL design is very nice, not a bad rifle. I mena, you can buy Hi-Cap mags, but it might land you on a watch list, just like being on this site.
EDIT: And if you can, fit a nice muzzle brake. The standard ones aren't very good. -

I always go with the old classic, dual mag clips . Makes for a quicker reload. -

Would it be a good idea to get those tripod-type things that slide down from the barrel and allow a person to rest the gun onto a fixed object? I imagine all of those bullets are going to make the gun heavy, so one of those tripod things might help.

It's not like you're getting an M60 or something like that. Just get a good gun, and worry about all the accessories later.
