    Okay, maybe I should have specified that if I found myself a dishwasher for life, then I would feel like a failure.

    It is honest work, though. But sadly it doesn't pay enough to really do much.

    It can also easily be automated.

    And you only get like 10% of the tips on top of your minimum wage.

    Probably my least favorite job I've had.

    But to each their own.

    So we've gotten to a point that we can generate perfectly human-looking faces that would trick anyone, among millions of other technological advances recently in AI and the like, and yet we can't build a dishwasher that is more effective than a human?

    I find that hard to believe.

    Also, humans don't guarantee 100% cleanliness. Extensively trained astronauts and engineers and medical doctors all make mistakes... I imagine that a person being paid minimum wage to wash dishes is AT LEAST as likely to make mistakes.

    Deploying software is comparatively ez. Engineering a reliable hardware product with the same range of flexibility as a human in a manual job is fucking hard.

    Good luck getting them to scrape the burns out of a pot. Good luck getting them to clean irregularly shaped cups and bowls.

    Fair enough... But, we will reach a point in the near future where we will have "3d programmers" that are basically both engineers and programmers... It's not that outlandish a notion. Look at the rise in 3d printing hobbyists, and Arduino robotics, and so on. We will get to a point where mechanical/electrical engineering and software "engineering" will all be united into a single field.

    Have you ever been a dishwasher?

    It's not exactly an enviable position.

    This is a great question. I consider myself an addict, but not a junkie. I'm not sure if junkie is a slang or real technical term... but the image that's in my head when I think a junkie is someone who's unclean, homeless, and has subjugated completely everything else in their life, for the drug... basically they've lost all their possessions and relationships with others to the drug, really only have the clothes on their back.

    I kind of think this too... when I think of junkie... I mainly think of heroin. Tweakers are speed freaks junkies are heroin addicts.

    Eventually everything will be automated, but it's not remotely a realistic present concern for dishwashers.

    He shouldn't be expected to achieve better results than the astronaut or surgeon or whatever.

    He's washing dishes, not going into space or operating.

    You could easily build a machine that would perfectly wash any type of dish or pot with current technology. Fitting such a machine into the average restaurant kitchen and/or running it cost effectively compared to paying some sap minwage is another matter.
