They're putting their money on the fact Russia actually doesn't want WWIII and will go to great lengths to prevent it. Going so far as to let the jedis get away with downing one of their planes, by proxy.

Actually, Shoigu (Russian Defence Minister) has announced 3 new measures in response to recent jediry:
1. The delivery of the S-300 anti-air systems to Syria was suspended in 2013 due to israeli objections - the delivery will be finalised within 2 weeks.
2. ECM systems specifically designed to interfere with GPS and missile targeting are to be deployed down the Tartus coast.
3. Russian and Syrian air defence systems will now be fully interlinked. The networked system already exists, but previously not all data was shared - now it is. The reasoning given is that the Syrian system has no IFF capability (ability to determine whether a target is friendly or not) which led to the missile striking the IL-20 instead of the israeli warplanes. The Russian system does, and by sharing all of its targeting data friendly fire incidents can be prevented in the future.
The Russian S-400 systems have much more advanced long-range radar than anything currently fielded by Syria, which ostensibly means that Syrian air defences will now be able to detect israeli planes almost as soon as they leave the runway. Attempting to evade detection by coming in from the ocean or from Lebanon will no longer be an option.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -

those werent terrorists. those were experienced and trained soldiers
when amateurs (terrorists) fire a fully automatic weapon they instinctively keep the trigger held back until the magazine is empty. it takes training and practice to fire a full-auto in controllable bursts.

Apparently Russia's deployed the new OLS-35 thermal/infrared detection system - able to detect aircraft regardless of 'stealth' characteristics up to 90km away, but not able to create a weapons-quality lock independently. -

with the technology we have these days, ai or not, they could have easily come up with sound-seeking missiles, homing to the frequency of figuter jet engines.

soviets have always tried to expand their unconventional scanning systems. the west has IR/thermal technology but they're not as dependent (compared to radar) as the soviets.
the thing with a weapons lock on a target is it needs to be more 'powerful' as compared to just knowing there's something out there, especially with stealth. for example (I used this literal example in a class) search radars are like going into a dark gymnasium and turning on a low-wattage night light. it'll come on and let you generally see what's there...and see almost everything....but not very well. that is search radar.
with a 6volt latern flashlight used in that same darkened gym, it'll light up a small, focused area relatively clearly....but only a small point. that is the radar needed to guide a weapon. -
