Also crime statistics are definitely going down in America at least and they have since the 70's. You wouldn't know it by watching the news though. Actually, everything in the world is pretty much getting better. Crime. Poverty. Disease. World hunger. It's great. This is legit one of the most peaceful times in all of history, but it has nothing to do with gun control. Guns don't MAKE crime. Nobody says "Well damn, I don't have a gun so I guess I'm NOT going to rob this gas station."

Even Michael Moore pointed out that gun ownership per capita is higher in fucking Canada than in the US, and we have like a handful of gun related homocides per year. We can own guns. Shit, we can own some guns that Americans think of as rare. We just don't have the same cultures surrounding guns that America has - read: perpetual gang violence, ghetto culture, drunken rednecks shooting eachother over eating the last chicken wing, etc. About the only thing we share is the perpetual glorification of guns and gun violence in media... and 90% of that is exported from the US, which both feeds off of and fuels those other cultures present in America. California has (arguably) more restrictive gun laws than Canada does, a similar population, and more gun violence annually.
Even if there is some correlation (I mean, if there are NO GUNS, then by definition there can't be gun violence... so there is SOME), is it enough of a correlation to justify gun control? That's what you should be arguing, not whether a correlation exists at all.
Also: are you asking if I think every person in power wants to minimize the number of ways in which the people they control can remove them from power? No, just 99.999999% of them.
^ This guy will say and do anything to stay in power. He is the vast majority of politicians from literally every country.

This is why the gun ownership in Alaska is way higher than the rest of the country and similarly has less gun violence. It's not about "gun culture." That's almost as stupid as that rape culture bullshit. If Canada had cities half as big as America, without all the socialism shit (which contributes to fighting the poverty/crime relationship) you'd have all the same violence.

I didn't say it was about gun culture, I said it was about American culture and tangentially its obsession with guns. Gang violence and ghetto culture would probably still go down with machetes in America if y'all worshipped the machete like you worship the divine firearm. Gun culture is about the only culture in America that actually treats guns with any measure of responsibility.
And if it's not about the number of guns, and it's about the specifics of American population density and distribution, then you probably shouldn't say misleading things like:

It isn't misleading if you aren't an idiot. Tell me, how many people in these gangs do you think are getting legal guns? In these areas guns are easy to get, and instead of machetes they use guns because you don't bring a machete to a gun fight. There is nothing about culture to it at all, it's just the best killing tool available to the common man. -

Exactly. And any America with the same culture as it has now would view whatever tool that was as a God given right; the tool to defend the meek and their inheritance of the Earth; the tool that is almost a responsibility for any American to own: to defend their nation, their families, their rights, their property, and themselves. I'm saying you could remove guns from the country and still have an America with vastly exaggerated violent crime and homicide rates because this idea of violently defending yourselves from all forms of tyranny, and righteous violence against those who've wronged you (see: the founding of your glorious nation) is a core tenet of American society. As is the pursuit of money by any means necessary, which in a society built on this obsession leads to a lot of people using their "tool" for shady things to make money.
I'm saying America has a particular cultural identity that breeds subcultures who idolize whatever tool happens to fill the niche of "best killing tool" for various reasons, be they moral/financial/protective/defensive etc. You could take America out of the world entirely and give all their guns (and more!) to India and not have the same problem. Because the problem isn't the availability of guns or even necessarily population density or urbanization.
I'd also say that I don't think it's even a particularly bad thing that America is the way it is: it's almost admirable, really. Freedom comes at a cost. Americans would always keep and bear arms - the best they are allowed. And restricting civilians from access to the means of defending themselves from oppression is rightfully seen as a stepping stone on the road to tyranny.~ -
