Well I have been a Lakers fan for a long time and Kobe has always been my favorite player. Despite his one blemish (his rape thing) back in the day that was very muddy and convoluted, he was seemingly a great father, a great husband, and iconic in his era of basketball, easily in the top 10 all time and arguably one of the top 5. I've watched him play in many many games and saw a lot of clutch moments in the NBA and the Olympics.
I realize that sports dont really matter but he, like some others in his position had done a lot for the game and a lot for their communities. He has a multitude of organizations that were built to benefit others and help out society in general.
He is extremely well respected among the NBA community and a name that a shit load of people know, even people that hate sports, or the Lakers. I've seen plenty of posts by people reaffirming this.
At the end of the day he is human and of course when a celebrity dies it's made a big deal of. It's sad for his family and for all the lives he has impacted. I love Kobe. And he loved me too even though he didn't know it.

I've been a huge Celtics fan all my life. Kobe was always like Darth Vader to me as a player but respected his game. Really is a sad day man.
