So I think why some people are retarded by this fact was they wanted to make the border level and land was traded off after North Dakota was apart of the Louisiana purchase which the French owned most of the central portion of what is the USA today.
And the US and Canada almost went to war a few times over it. I think Toronto area was debated as being closer to the US and therefor should become apart of the USA while they (British owned Canada) and the USA fought for some time. Toronto region ended up in Canada while some of the western states like Montana and Washington (which was Oregon Territory as well as Idaho before becoming their own statehood for easier management). those states borders (which was Oregon) was pushed up and given to America in exchange for Toronto region. I think they found Coal and Iron (Steel eventually) in those parts of Canada in which the British claimed they wanted the minerals for their factories.
it wasn't just "Hear.. we draw this fucking line" and that settles that. took a few decades to dispute this shit out. probably more like a solid 100 years. -

Ahh yes, the average American is simply confused about basic geography because of their deep education in the history of 18th and 19th century land deals brokered between the US and the British Empire. Easy mistake to make really, under the circumstances. -

I know for a fact this border was adjusted and can not remember what it was refereed as.
and the US and Britain had scrimmages long after the war of 1812 (the second war we had)
so there has been conflicts in which shots were fired. And of course between French Canada and English Canada as well. .all the way into the early 20th century. -
2019-10-26 at 11:08 AM UTCCanada could easily annex Maine and nobody would even notice. Susan Collins and that independent senator don't even speak American and Stephen king would write a book about it and everyone would decide it was a better idea. The states can take a fruit basket in return

i'm pretty sure all those big straight lines between many Us states did not come from war. territory that was fought over would be jagged depending on who was winning where.
