I'm really not big into hadiths considering they're what gets misconstrued so much. The verse of the quran I'm most familiar with regarding substances is this:
They ask you (O Muhammad, peace be upon him) concerning alcoholic drink and gambling. Say: โIn them is a great sin, and (some) benefit for men, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit.โ
[Al-Qurโan 2:219]
obviously this extends to all substances. I haven't gambled since I've been out of prison and I'm a long way from where I used to be in terms of drug use. I've talked about this specific one numerous times with people. This passage is more concise as to its verbotenness:
"O ye who believe ! Strong drinks and games of chance and idols and divining of arrows are only an infamy of Satan's handiwork. Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed. Satan seeketh only to cast among you enmity and hatred by means of strong drink and games of chance, and turn you from remembrance of Allah and from (His) worship. So will ye not then abstain?"
Al-Qur'an 5:90-91
but my favorite one is a hadith with a wicked metaphor about how alcohol is the door through which sins pass through or something like that basically says alcohol makes other sins way more permissible
I have struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for literally 20 years and I'm doin pretty fucking good now all things considered. There were admittedly times in my life when I was better and Islam helps me aspire towards that. I'm a compulsive drug user who's miraculously managed to quit drinking which seems insane for people who know me, my background and my family. If you knew anything about Islam you would know it is an evolutionary process. Nobody just becomes a muslim after years of degeneracy and drops all their coping mechanisms right away, or at least not this guy. Still, I have a ways to go, I have good people around me and I'm learning more everyday. I'm still kind of racist towards Saudi's (non quraysh) and probably offended someone tonight when I said Islamic extremism all had Saudi roots and he told me he lived there for 14 years and was kind of unnerved because I had done something very violent to him personally years ago but I asked if he could help me with my arabic and he said he will. Growth! -
