You young fellers have no idea. Dime bags and nickel bags didn't mean it was 5g or 10g, it just meant you were getting $10 worth of weed. Depending on the dealer you went to, a $10 bag could be anywhere from a few grams to an ounce.
'Dime Bag' is a general term for $10 worth of weed. Back in the day, a Quarter Ounce (7 Grams) only cost $10. An eighth cost $5, thus the terms, nickel bag and dime bag. Some cicles still refer to a Quarter Ounce as a 'Dime Bag'.

You never knew what you were going to get back then. You took your chances. You could buy a dime bag and end up with a half ounce of shit weed, or you could end up with a quarter of top shelf weed. You could buy a nickel bag and end up with a half ounce of "Maui Wowie". Just depended on who you bought from and what they grew. We didn't have all these strain names you have today. All we had was word of mouth and dealers' good names and underground identifiers for the product.
Specs is pretty much right. Gosh, did I say that?😂
There were dimes and nickel bags in the 70s and early 80s. They were not sold by weight. A nickel bag gave you 5 average sized joints, and a dime bag gave you 10 average sized joints. Way back when I rode my dinosaur to school, you’d get a dime bag of 10 pre-rolled joints.

That doesn't sound like 5-28 grams of good weed to me.
me fadder is from the general vicinity of specs and is roughly the same age. He told me that there wasn't much of domestic market and not many people smoked weed, it was mostly hash, so the mexican brick weed would be cheap as fuck and everyone just called it "brick weed" or there would be "elephant" which is basically what people call "kush" now and it was most expensive. It's very foreseeable 5-10 grams was $10 considering around that time the Canadian government would send you an ex army issue jeep you could put together yourself and drive for $50. Shit used to be cheaper. It's crazy to think how cheap cigarettes were when I was a kid compared to what they are now. Fucking 5 or 10 grams of weed (esp homegrown) for ten bucks in 1975 is really the least outrageous thing spectral has claimed in a while
