It's probably English speaking settlers who got confused by this and somehow Indian stuck? Idk. But he didn't think he was in India. I mean that'd be really crazy if he (in his view) somehow got past the 'pacific' and slipped past most of asia to India. Indonesia would make more sense since its right on the edge.
