E.I. stands for Employment Insurance in Canada.
Basically, I paid biweekly premiums with each paycheck towards an insurance pool that pays out if I get laid off (doesn't typically apply when one quits or gets fired).
Job before was software developer. -

We also have welfare as well.
E.I. is different from welfare as it's a form of insurance. I paid hundreds (maybe thousands? not totally sure) of dollars towards it, and now I can make a claim because I got laid off.
But just like any form of insurance, you get more back than you paid, but that's only because most people don't get laid off all the time.
This is probably the first time in my life I've been officially laid off.
I've quit, been fired, completely stopped going and ignored all phone calls from the company, etc...
But laid off, that's new to me. -
