Originally posted by Lanny Dishes, they're pretty easy to do but they don't stay done for more than a couple of hours. Like you never get to have the dishes done for longer than it is until the next meal. A perpetual reminder of our base, material needs. Our status as common animals. They sit there taunting me, they say "in your conceit, you, man, forget that in mere days your body fails you without food. All your accomplishments, all your civilization, and you haven't escaped the most basic needs of your ancestors. Woe unto you, who thinks to rise above, who denies your place in the world. Look on my cluttered, stacked, grease spattered facade and know of biological fact, your inevitable demise, the futility of all your projects." Fuck dishes man, they're some bitch shit.
Holy fuck that is pretty much exactly how I view dishes.
I'm so tempted to just use dollar store disposable plastic plates, cups, and cutlery, but then that environmentalism guilt kicks in.
I still do keep some plastic dishes/cutlery around for occasional use, though, to be honest. If I just did the dishes and my apartment is looking nice and spotless (and dish free), I will use the plastic for a meal or two just to preserve that (unfortunately temporary) feeling of "doneness." -

Sounds like an awful lot of mental wrangling for a load of dishes.
It's not even just about an entire load.
From the way Lanny describes it, I imagine he sees dishes much the same way as I do - even just a few dirty dishes in the sink can be a symbol of something that is just plain "unfinished."
I even went and bought a small "countertop" dishwasher because a full size dishwasher felt like overkill...
It turns (lol) out it doesn't fit on my counter due to the protruding cupboards.
So now I have another appliance taking up room (on my kitchen floor), but at least I can load my dirty dishes into it... EXCEPT FOR pots, pans, larger plates, etc, because they just don't fit.
I really don't like dirty dishes. -
