Paid mods tanked and the single player demographic is a lot harder to get on board with the most profitable sales tactics like splitting one game worth of content into a string of DLC each with its own price tag or anything looking like a recurring payment. MMO people are well used to the abuse and will generally go along with it usually saying something like "at least it's not as bad as Diablo 3/Final Fantasy 14/Ark:SE". Hooking some suckers on an MMO, especially when you can force a huge audience into it by essentially taking their favorite IP hostage in the form of an MMO, is just way too profitable for Beth not to try to go for.

It's basically just fallout 4 online, same engine. I didn't put much time into fo4 but I think 76 will be something I put many hours into and enjoy the experience a lot more than fo4
I'd rather they license the FO4 engine to Obsidian like they did with FO3 and we can get a new game in 2 years which is actually better than anything the people left in Beth studios can make.

Also 76 is supposed to have lifetime free updates so no more DLC for once, no season pass. -
