I really don't see why 'standard' models need it. as for gaming laptops, have you ever tried driving modern games on 4k? I have a friend who has two 1080 TITANs in SLI and still struggles to get 60+fps in new games
I'm not trying to play video games at 4K on a laptop, the point of a high resolution display is to have a higher pixel density. Low DPI fonts suck dick once you've used something better. Everyone looks a text on a laptop so it's not some niche use case, and especially if you're programming you're doing pretty much nothing but looking at text. I'd gladly trade cost or some amount battery life for a good display.
Like sure you can put a 1080 display on a 13/15" laptop and it's passable, I'd accept it on like a $500 laptop or something, but on a 17" relatively high end laptop it's just shameful. -

spend some time and money, find oem factories in china that will produce laptop to your spec.

The best I can find to replace my 7 year old W520 is a chinkpad P51, which comes with a worse display out of the box unless I opt for the battery sucking 4K option, and the keyboard/trackpad layout is so bad that I'm convinced Lenovo hired a blind retard to design it. So I guess I'll build a nice Ryzen desktop instead and stop using laptops altogether. Fuck everything.
Not necessarily. I think you meant to say, home-end user laptops are shit. This is very true. If you are looking for the features that are typically lacking in what you can find at your local Walmart/Best Buy, then you need to be prepared to spend more.
