   it was then in the midst of ''engaging'' the iranian boat that they noticed an oncoming plane, decided that its a target, gave it warnings on the wrong channel ....

   the one that shot at the american helo, probably, but regardless of that the entire purpose of that class of ship is to protect a carrier/carrier BF from soviet aircraft/cruisemissles/ASMs...meaning they shoot down flying thingys.
