Mayan tradtition of heart sacrifice for many things. A good new year. A healthy crop. Even punishment. It was sometimes a WANTED and SOUGHT-AFTER thing to be chosen to sacrifice your heart.
These modern day MEXICANS, working for the cartels, are trying to tie themselves to ancient tradition much like ISIS tries to tie itself to Islamic tradition.
At the end of the day, it's completely barbaric.
On a personal note, I didn't think the video was that bad, to be honest. 2 guys 1 hammer upset me more than this did. I just watched it and was kinda like, "Meh" -

I stopped when I when I saw a video of a bunch of chinamen working on some metal scaffolding in the rain next to a power line. The storm blew the line into contact with the scaffolding and they couldn't pull their hands off of it and they just stood weird and then one by one went limp, then started smoking.
I can only imagine the sound and smell. Still messes me up thinking about it -
