I'm thinking of buying a handgun soon. I don't have a CCW, but ideally I'd at least carry it around in my car (once I get one) until I get a permit, if I do. Do I want something for 9mm, .45, .357, or what? And why? I've been thinking Sig Sauer 1911, but mainly because the name is cool. I don't know shit about guns, really.

Also I don't know shit about the different kinds of ammo other than they're different sizes and hollow points are typically better for stopping someone than FMJ.

yes= what kind/caliber and what did you think of it?
no= borrow a .380 and shoot it. then try a 9mm. then try a .45acp. dont waste your time with obscure wanna-be calibers like .357-sig-doodoo or .40-bitchfag

Get a 1911 or glock 30 (or 21 if you never intend to carry concealed). Try to find a place that you can try before you buy. 1911s are usually harder to shoot if you've never shot before
If those two are too much kick get a glock 19
If your hands are too small for glocks get a smith and Wesson m&p
If you have money to blow get hk
Stay away from Jimenez and ultra-cheap shit like that
Only thing you have to know about ammo types is FMJ = practice and hollow point = self defense

then do as i suggested...start out with a .380 to get a feel for pistols...then go to a 9mm...then up to a .45.
for that amount you can get a good, reliable one...HK...Sig...even some good custom 1911 pistols are less than $1500. glocks are 'good', while being cheap, but i personally dont like them, or any other striker pistol. when you do buy it, keep in mind you need a few hundred dollars in addition to buying cleaning shit...holster...storage case...extra magazines...and most important practice ammo and the actual ammo you plan to use to shoot people with.

There are TONS of good platforms, my advice is to get something in a generally effective caliber (.45, .40, 9mm, etc.) and practice practice practice. As a beginner, even a cheap Hi-Point is going to out shoot you. What I would do is get a good Glock, upgrade to night sights, leave everything else alone and spend the rest of your budget on ammo. Glocks aren't perfect and you may end up preferring something else down the road, but they're low cost, effective, and they WORK.
If you don't have anyone local to instruct, I recommend looking into Magpul Dynamics and other informational videos online by REPUTED sources such as Haley Strategic and guests on his channel. Watch, then apply what you learn at the range. Training will take you way further than buying the best pistol and just having it lay around. After that, you'll start to form your own opinions on what you'd like in a pistol and you can go from there without having to ask here.

the thing about jedi-tube instructional videos is the content ranges from fucktarded stupidity bordering on dangerous to high-end content that previously was exclusive to specific military training courses. for a noob sorting through all that shit its the pitfall

Kahr CT 40. I'm a small built guy and it was an effortless gun to handle and shoot though I'm not certain that's always a good thing but it's my "daily carry".

They have shooting ranges you can go to (even here in good ol Liberal San Fran). You rent the gun, and the range and you purchase rounds I guess (and targets) and test them out. someone will probably have you watch a 4 hour video (did you tell me this, Infinity?) and then go gun crazy on paper targets.
I know I can get a shotgun but the feds wont clear a handgun for me (Im told by the gun dealer) because of my meds. Unless I work for a security guard company or require one to protect people or money. there is a business only use.
