For a first sport bike, what do you think?
I was going to get a used 500 or 650 but I keep hearing that good used sport bikes are always priced just short of new ones, and if the price is low it's either stolen or wrecked
I want to get a zx-10 but I know that's suicide for a first bike
I've ridden bikes before, but never a sport bike, so I fully expect to go down once or twice but hopefully not. As much as I'd love to go brand new, i wouldn't want to tear up a $7k investment if they're only good for one wreck. I know if I go down on a full-fairing sport bike I'll probably have to replace the fairings, but what about a "naked bike" or streetfighter? Do they tear up easy?
I'm 6 feet tall and over 250 pounds so I'll probably have to get 500cc or higher
Leaning toward kawasaki or Suzuki, but if a Yamaha or Honda calls my name I would get it.

for a first bike, get a cheap POS that is SAFE and runs decently...then beat the shit out of it. and make sure you get good body armor and wear it.
then when you break it your feelings will be 'meh' instead of suicidal thoughts at breaking a $12k toy
as far as pricing on used bikes...its like anything else automotive-related: depends on the seller. i bought a $8000 bike for $5000 because the dudes wife was 'making' him sell it and i was the only one that answered his newspaper classifieds ad.
nowadays bike prices are ridiculous and dealing with the dealers is a bullshit hassle. $10k for a CBR600...$12k for a CBR1000...$18k for a S1000RR...fuck bike dealerships. twice i went into a dealership (one honda...one BMW) with approved financing from my personal bank and couldnt get the salesman to stop being jedis on their inflated 'deals' so i went home with my money and they kept their overpriced junk.

Watch Craigslist and wait for a deal. My last bike I got around 6 years ago was off CL. The guy was asking for $4,500. KBB was in the $5,500-$6,000 range, so I jedied him down to $4,000. He laid the bike down on some gravel and it spooked him, which is why he would selling it for a deal. He replaced all the damaged parts, which were cosmetic anyway. All in all, I’ve been happy with the bike and I could sell it right now and get at least what I paid for it.

nowadays most stolen bikes are either shipped overseas (south america...messyco) or stripped and sold for parts to mechanics or online.
as far as trashed...its almost impossible to tell if repairs are done by an expert. sloppy repairs are easy to find and identify. mismatched handlebar caps...mismatched clutch/brake levers...same with the common parts that would be damaged in a drop.
check the VIN thru a state DMV...theyll tell you if it has a valid title

New bike is stupid simp, stupid question. Almost all new riders will lay down their craft at least once.

^^ I dropped my first bike immediately right after driving it for 10 secs. The reason? Adjusting to the weight and acceleration needed to turn. In short, your probably gonna wanna take that first turn slow.. even if its just circling in a lot of whatever, and likely.. without prior knowledge of experience, it may just tip on over on you. Fortunately, these sort of drops don't typically cause much damage or harm.. maybe a slightly scuffed fairing. Needless to say, the damage could also be more sever, such as the dreaded dented tank (fugyly). I started on a 650 that was slightly older, but adjusted quickly. If you've got the extra cash and wanna go the safe route, blow $150 and go take the MSF course. Atleast you can fuck around on their tiny bikes there, and when you go home to jump on your own iron horse, you'll have a much better understanding of what your doing. And I'm pretty sure you get your license or permit taking that course.. not sure, but I do know it causes your insurance to go down. Another thing, can't go wrong with full coverage on a newer model bike. Worst case scenario, you crash it out.. it's paid for, bike might still be repairable or used as a parts bike. Things to consider.
Also, I'd start on a 650 or belowe. The lower the better kinda, but if your buying a new bike I'd suggest 500-650 just because it's a good size bike for new or experiences riders. Some 300's are pretty wicked bikes themselves. Really, just gotta be realistic.. Are you going to daily driver, do you plan on riding the interstate, looking for something to go on long trips.. All those factors play a role.
Pretty sure I got off topic... Back on topic, buy a nice used bike off craigslist or go to a local dealerships and check out their trade ins. All of the guys at the local place I go to seem to be on the up and up because they're passionate enthusiast themselves and want to help the buyers get the right bike for them, instead of just making a sell.. Can't say its like that everywhere. Also, if you go through a dealership to get a trade in, always atleast try to get that first number down.. You may succeed, may not.. Or try to get some in store gear packaged with it. Never know until you try, and if you are successful, you come away with more than you would have.

When I made this thread, I was new to SPORT bikes, not motorcycles in general
I ended up buying a brand new Ninja 300 for $4.5k last December and had no problems for the first thousand miles.
Then in February I decided i was going to get fucked up and ride it home. I would've been fine if it wasn't for fog so bad I couldn't see a foot in front of me, GPS sending me all over the place, anger from the events of the night, and being totally lost.
I couldn't see a foot in front of me and ended up hitting a median at about 40mph
I made it over the median but hit the curb on the other side, breaking my collar bone, shoulder blade and lacerating my spleen
Then recently I got a new set of bodywork, put it on, and have had another thousand miles trouble free
And I finally quit drinking and lost thirty pounds.
