   It's a lot simpler than that. Liberal and conservative have nothing to do with democrat or republican. Conservatives simply want to conserve or revert back to a way of living. Liberals want to embrace a new way of living. That's why Republicans in 1865 (when slavery was abolished) were liberals, not conservatives.
   
   Then you have terms like right and left, for which you can also say that the republicans used to be left-wingers. Right wingers support social hierarchy, and if that sounds sensationalist and SJW to you, you can apply that social hierarchy to things like the market. "They're poor because they don't work hard enough, because they deserve it. Let's cut the planned parenthood budget and make them pay for the healthcare themselves. Why should we pay? We worked to get here."
   
   Left-wingers support equality. "Let's Obamacare up in this bitch so that we can all have health care. The rich people should be paying for it because they can already afford healthcare."

   If you're going to point fingers and say right used to be left because of their traditional social values, that won't go very far. The left has long been in favor of strict social codes as well, from 'preserving their way of life' with the KKK to modern day identity politics with victim hierarchies.
