But there are plenty of places currently enacting legislation that affects the public in a much broader sense.

And the HIV legislation s completely not out of context. THats FUCKED. If someone knowingly infects me with HIV...SIX FUCKING MONTHS? I could go to jail for longer than that for stealing a SATA cable from Best Buy. And what if I rarely visit a doctor or get tested? What then? What if i think im just feeling more and more awful? Best case scenario, I drag myself to the doctor a couple years later and find its already done a bunch of damage to my body, and I have to try to get MediCal to cover my perscriptions and cover the co-pays and shit. This is really fucked. Not having to tell sex partners that you have HIV doesn't "destigmatize" anything, it just allows people to pretend like it doesnt exist.

I love California and everything. I was born here...good chance ill die here....or in SE Asia in a brothel. However, we have some SERIOUS wrinkles to iron out. These fuckers are straight retarded. Main things being gun laws, immigration and this gay shit.

Where? And what do these cases, if they exist, have to do with this thread?

inb4canada, freedom of speech is literally not a concept in jurisprudence in most of the world, getting your panties in a bunch over Canadian pronoun legislation in one breath while ignoring the terrible state of freedom of speech/press in most of the middle east and asia, and in pockets in south america
and africa is a painfully obvious double standard.

More than anything it's simply irrelevant. Californian policy of mandating disclosure of status as HIV+ has exactly nothing to do with the bill people are getting upset about here. The juxtaposition of the two policies is pure rhetoric, they have nothing to do with each other.

Idk. A medical professional should have some basic rights too. Ponder a brief scene if you will....

NURSE: Hello, FEMALE, LICENSED DOCTOR! The patient was admitted last night. She presented to minor lacerations to the....

PATIENT: YOU FUCKING BIGOTED FUCK! I TOLD YOU LIKE FIVE TIMES, ITS "XE"!! FUCKING "XE" YOU RETARD!! AS IN XE'HUETECPOTIL? YOU FASCIST, IGNORANT FUCK! ILL SUE THIS HOSPITAL INTO OBLIVION EVEN THOUGH IVE SPENT NOT A PENNY ON TREATMENT OR TAXES IN THE LAST 10 YEARS AND I DIDNT EVEN SIGN UP FOR FREE INSURANCE SO FUCK ALL OF YOU.

What are we supposed to "ponder" here? What impact do you think the legislation this thread is about has on that scenario?

The next time you go to a hospital, demand to be addressed as a horse. Tell them you only identify as a horse, and wish to be called Mare So-and-So. So, like, Mare Lanny. Hello, I'm a horse, and you may address me as a mare. If they refuse, file a harassment complaint.

You don't like that? I apologize and call you macho man or whatever the fuck you want but that's just me. Getting sued and with the current climate regarding gender issues probably fucked because of something petty like that is a real problem. Tolerance isn't a one way street. You have to tolerate peoples' ignorance to some degree and not flip your shit over everything.

Smoking has a WAY bigger health risk than somebody wanting to be some other gender. And who knows, maybe it is the person with the feelings dying? Maybe they are recovering from a heart attack and need to keep their blood pressure normalized. A doctor should fight to do with drugs and by telling them to stop smoking and also by respecting whatever bullshit wordplay they want, because anything else is detrimental to the patient's health. The job of a doctor is not to be 'right' it is to take care of their patients.

This bill does not account for mistakes like you just described. It specifically says "repeatedly." So if you just make a mistake or two, whatever. This only effects people who are repeatedly pissing off their patients.

Originally posted by RisiR † Also, what do you mean with "if"?

I mean, when you go to a hospital there's like a 99% chance (tRU STatistk) that whatever gender(s) that person believes they are has absolutely no bearing on their healthcare whatsoever. They're going in for a lump or a flu or a car accident. Now, if it actually matters and they're doing something like wanting something that would matter (like wanting their ovaries to be checked when they don't have any) then yeah, a doctor has to put his foot down. But pronouns are much more of a social issue. The medical truth doesn't change, despite what people want to think. Still doesn't mean anybody should be butting their opinions into the hospital. If you don't want to use their pronoun and you're really against it, just don't use any.

The only reason this is an issue in the first place here is because doctors and nurses and pharmacists are allowed to act on their beliefs instead of focusing on being doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. 1yr is a little harsh, but most people probably won't get a year in jail for this. Probably won't even get 6 months. Likely just fines and some class. People get out of jail time for far worse.

It's not a doctor's job to have rights tho. It's their job to help people. They should be able to express themselves within those boundaries, but I don't think gender has any bearing on that. The only possible purpose it could serve using the right/wrong pronoun is to do exactly like you described.

You don't have to pretend. You just have to be nice while you're working at the fucking hospital. There are a million situations in which you need to keep your mouth shut while working at a hospital and I have no idea why you guys think this is any different. You just want to be against anything which seems SJW, but this has nothing to do with that. Politics should be kept out of hospitals.

Like I already said, doctors give up a lot of their rights to these things when they decide to work in the medical field. Check the hippopototototomus oaf.

I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:

I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.

I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.

I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.

I will not be ashamed to say "I know not," nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient's recovery.

I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.

It's the whole 'first, do no harm' thing. If it isn't medically relevant to whatever the doctor is needing to do, they need to just play along and be nice. I'm not even the respect your pronouns type. If somebody asks me to do that shit I'm just going to stop talking to them because fuck that drama. But medical care is different. I think in literally no other situation would I be in favor of there being consequences for using the wrong pronoun. It's dumb as fuck. But so is bringing your personal opinions and beliefs in the way of people's healthcare.
