can one of the resident /g/entlemen give me a rundown on how to unfuck the cable spaghetti in my computer
2017-07-25 at 4:21 AM UTC
but see all the cables are dollar tree-tier and half of them seem to be either way too long or just plain pointless. i dont know which serves what purpose either... i think at this point the best thing i could do is to read up on how to wire all the shit myself and look into the function of it all.
i did pretty much that when i was first learning about computer hardware when the time came to fix/replace borked components and i had no idea what the fuck i was doing. when i replaced the mobo a few years back i left a couple fans unplugged because the mobo didnt have enough sysfan ports for them all. since then there was been a very noticeable increase in drive temps and taking the time to rewire the computer and get some hands on experience with it is probably the smartest choice. my computer isnt a prebuilt but since my dad doesnt know jack shit about them and neither did my 7th grade self at the time they just had the fry's nerds do it. once i unfuck my financial situation i want to build a computer of my own, all by myself for both the nerd xp and saving some money. gonna have a hard time doing that if i dont have a clue on how to make my expensive pieces of silicon actually function though, tbh fam...

yeah, if you're not familiar you really want to look up what the different parts/cables do. watch a few build-log videos and they'll explain most of what they do, which should help you understand what goes where.
in terms of the fans specifically, most motherboards only have 1 CPU fan port (3 pins) and maybe 2 pwm fan ports (4 pins) - if that's not enough for you, you'll want to get splitter cables so that you can plug multiple fans into one port. if you're that-way inclined it's pretty straightforward to strip the wires down and solder them all together in parallel so you essentially have a whole bunch of fans attached to a single plug - fans don't eat a lot a of power and it takes a lot to overload the motherboard/power supply.
