For example, the browser could request an avatar that is 10x12, but the server will not permit requests of 10x12 from that particular device/browser, so it converts the request to 12x10 instead, which is permitted. Something like that.

That still doesn't explain why I can use the same browser that doesn't render the image properly via the BBS to view the image directly in it's correct format. I understand what you're driving at, but the server is rendering the image just fine. -
