Do you know how to make a braid? Braid a couple of electric cords together if you intend to jump off a stool or some shit. Your regular old electric cord might work but i would braid it just to make sure.
Also, a rope noose is a classic. I taught myself how to tie a noose, it's pretty easy actually and very stylish. If you are going to be hanging yourself i would definitely recommend tying a noose in a thick piece of rope.
Come to think of it, a belt might work. A nice leather one.

I'd probably use a log chain. I had a friend who tried the classic rope noose and tree in the woods. The noose or tree broke I forget which but point is it didn't work for him. He's like 6'6" and 250+ lbs though so that probably played into the failure I'm sure. It's not that I'd be scared of not succeeding but I always had this fear that if I failed to kill myself I'd somehow end up retarded in a wheel chair and then would be too stupid to realize how miserable I was.."I like da Pweety flowaz, DURRR!"
The log chain would almost ensure no breakage or failure. I guess I'd combine it with a metal rafter that seems pretty fool proof.
