Believe what you want missy, I DGAF.
Anyway, his case worker brought him over this afternoon and stayed for a bit while he checked out his room and whatnot. What's sad is that he had pretty much nothing to unpack. Just one skimpy duffel bag and a small backpack.
After she left, it was somewhat awkward, so I suggested we go on a walk through the neighborhood so I could show him where everything is. Tommy (fuck it, that's what I'll call him) was pretty stoked to see there's a community pool close by, even though he doesn't know how to swim yet.
When we got back we had dinner and then I told him to go chill in his room before bed. He wanted to watch TV, but I convinced him Lincoln Logs are much cooler and we built a little village together.
Tomorrow he'll start a summer program run by my church because I didn't have time to arrange anything else for the summer for while I'm at work. Tommy's incredibly shy, but he'll be with a good group of kids, so I think it'll be fine.
Right now he's in bed, and I'm just wondering what the fuck I've gotten myself into. Oh well tho. Day 1 was pretty easy. -
2017-06-12 at 3:29 AM UTCHow the hell did they fit him in the mail?? Seems like it would be kinda cramped in a box or parcel bag, even for a child.

2017-06-12 at 3:50 AM UTCI like Tommy. I want him, and I will HAVE him. Thank you.

2017-06-12 at 3:51 AM UTCLet him watch a bit of TV as long as it's good. IIRC there's actually no correlation between hours watched and school performance, it's largely driven by IQ and personality traits.
Every child should have access to good anime. I would have been extremely resentful toward my parents if they hadn't let me watch TV or use computers (IIRC most of the time I used them for educational games anyway, and they were great at that, they made learning fun).
Don't raise him the Russian way. Based on outcomes of your country, how it turned out, it clearly doesn't work. Your culture is trash, you're in America now and Tommy is a fucking American. -
2017-06-12 at 4:10 AM UTCI grew up without TV and turned out just fine. While minimal numbers of hours watched hasn't been shown to reduce academic performance, neither does no TV at all. Besides, there's something to be said for having to go outside and find something to do, taking the time to learn a hobby, doing chores, or just hanging out with some toys in his room. I've already gotten him some cool stuff like bins of army men, train tracks, large blocks, etc. He's totally set. There's simply no need for TV.
And fuck you. Russian culture rules. I've discarded the shitty parts and become a libertarian, so there's nothing to worry about. I plan on teaching him Russian actually, because young kids have an easier time picking up languages, and it'll be a great skill for him to have. -
2017-06-12 at 4:22 AM UTCFuck going outside. What if he's the kind that wants to go into STEM/the hard sciences? You'd literally be crippling him. He could find a passion for computers, or at the very least they could help him attain knowledge by having access to all of mankind's information. Lanny grew up spending most of his time indoors despite the beautiful environment he had available, spending most of his time in front of a computer or playing video games, and he's probably the most well adjusted and successful member here; which is pretty sad and not much of a competition to be fair. He's only 23 and making 100K+ in the financial sector of SF, working in the compsci field, which he majored in. The state also payed for most of his schooling, so he doesn't have debt. He also has about 300K in a low fee S&P index fund. Not only that, but when he was in middle school they gave him an assignment where they had to write about what they wanted to do after school and he wrote about wanting to travel, but they interpreted it as him wanting to be a bum/vagrant, so they put him in a school in southern california for troubled children, heavily minority and filled with gang members and other fuckups. The curriculum technically didn't even qualify for a 4 year university, but despite his disadvantages he scored high enough on the SAT to get into SFSU and have a state grant pay for it.
And now that gay marriage is legal in all parts of the United States, this lucky bachelor could be your's, and Tommy's new (2nd) dad!
Abandoning the negative aspects of Russian culture and becoming a libertarian (best people) is great, but as a libertarian you should understand the desire for freedom. I could not stand having my freedom restricted when I was with my parents. Let him do what he wants, within reason. -

Then he can go out there and learn how to build things. Physics, bitch. Trust me though, if he shows an interest in STEM, I'll support him fully in his endeavors. But keep in mind that he's only 7, and in a way experiencing the world for the first time because his abusive parents practically never let him out of the fucking house. He doesn't need TV.

The mere thought of this gives me shivers. The answer in 1000x no never ever ever ever, Mal.

As his parent, it is my responsibility to guide him and teach him important things. He's not completely free, nor should he be. And that's not to say I'm going to be a helicopter parent. There's a fine balance. -

2017-06-12 at 4:37 AM UTCMaybe he wants to be a TV personality but doesn't know it, and never will.
I'm just kidding, it's probably good what you're doing, but I mean let him watch some cartoons or some shit. He's 7. -
2017-06-12 at 4:48 AM UTCSaturday morning cartoons are an American tradition.

2017-06-12 at 4:52 AM UTCI'll buy him a gun when he's 12 to make up for it.
