There is no way to dump containers. The fire was kept under control by firefighting ships, but the fire burned for a month. -

A caveat being some ships have cranes aboard to maneuver their containers. Even if they didn't another ship with a crane could have come alongside up-wind away from the flames...if it was cost/benefit feasible.
