I've mentioned before that the neurological activity of those in love looks unnervingly, distinctly, like certain types of mental illnesses. It's all centered around selfish genes, designed to propagate the species, which is the worst thing in the world. Only about 5% of couples really seem to remain in love, for the rest it largely wanes, with some short lived spikes evoked through activities and emotion, with couples largely becoming complacent and entering into a state where they simply meekly enjoy the company of the other.
Once you snap out of this state, especially if you break up, you may realize you've largely been babbling at each other and acting like idiotic overexcited children, an absolute embarrassment and indignation. Love regularly drives people to do terrible, horrendous, things, to destroy the lives of themselves and others. It needs to be treated with immense caution, you should always strive to detach yourself and question the rationality of your actions, any major decisions, when in such a state.
You've read Schopenhauer's views on love. He's right. There's an enormous amount of scientific data I could dig up to support my argument, but doing so is a pain and it largely falls on deaf ears. When in such an emotional state, unsurprisingly, emotions, appeals to them, are the only thing that penetrates the psyche of the other. Something else I've posted related to the aforementioned is that a state of reasoning and an emotional state have been found to largely be mutually exclusive.
