Conflict Shitpile II - Sarin-like Substance Edition

2017-05-24 at 4:32 AM UTCTwo things:
SYRIA - Russian SOF have been deployed in the south, near the Jordan border as a sort of buffer between the US/FSA outpost and SAA attempting to retake the Syrian side of the border crossing.
PHILIPINES - News outlets are reporting that ISIS has taken Marawi, a city/region in the south. The real story according to the locals is that it's a domestic jihadi group whose name I've lost, claiming the city in the name of ISIS. They've taken several hospitals, police stations and the like and burnt a LOT.
Security forces (ie. police and drug squads) have pulled out temporarily, the army is on it's way. This is very close to Davao, so we can probably expect Duerte's old death squads to mobilise if they haven't already (the ones that didn't get folded into the security forces anyway). -

AFP Statement Updates on the Marawi Operations
as at 11PM 23May2017
Auth: Colonel Edgard Arevalo
Chief, AFP Public Affairs
"The situation in Marawi has been stabilized.
"Security forces are in full control of the situation.
"The armed men we are dealing with are not ISIS but Local Terrorist Group.
"The news being circulated by these terrorists and their sympathizers are spurious and are meant to spread lies and disinformation.
"It is propaganda to attract foreign terrorists support and recognition
"The reported 'eyewitness account' is untrue that Amai Pakpak Hospital has been occupied and the people there were held hostage.
"The Marawi City Hall was not occupied as was earlier reported merely quoting 'sources'.
"The sporadic firefights heard were harassment actions by terrorist sympathizers that were conducted as diversionary tactics to divide the attention of the reinforcing AFP personnel.
"But even these are already held in check.
"Information from operating units states that at around 2PM 23May2017 Soldiers, acting on the information regarding the presence of local terrorists and their cohorts, proceeded to Brgy. Basak, Malutlut, Marawi City for a law enforcement Operations.
"The security forces were fired upon constraining them to retaliate.
"Follow up operations are still ongoing and we cannot reveal other details so as not to compromise operational security.
"Follow on forces are underway as we speak to further ensure that we will keep the grip of the situation.
"Meanwhile, we fervently urge our people to refrain from posting in social media information that would tend exacerbate the situation. Especially photos and videos on the movements of our troops and on terrorist propaganda circulating through social media.
"We will continue to provide updates as often as possible with due regard to the security of our operating forces and the conduct of the operations itself."
So according to the Army, reports of the entire city being taken were highly exaggerated, with certain media outlets pushing that story in order to garner support among Islamists. They claim the situation is stable but forces are constantly being harassed when moving into the city. -
2017-05-27 at 8:38 AM UTCSYRIA - So far unconfirmed - an Israeli drone has attacked an SAA position, killing 3.

Well this is new, not unexpected though
Most of the foreign weapons I've seen recovered in Syria are either Turkish stock (missile launchers with Turkish firing instructions, crates of GRAD missiles with Turkish military markings etc.) or Eastern European gear (Balkans and Ukraine; most larger ordnance has these manufacturing markings even though stickers and paint are often removed). The US largely funnels small arms like non-Russian-made AK series and the infamous TOW Launchers. -

Israel would prefer Syria be shredded by terrorist factions rather than controlled by a strong government that is friendly to Iran. Historically the SAA is a huge pillar in regional stability. -

Fighting has intensified, the truth seems to be somewhere between the two reports - the city is not completely under control of Islamists, but they do maintain control over some parts. RT reports there have been ~30 civilian deaths, ~65 militants and ~10 security personnel.
The group in question calls themselves MAUTE, after their founder Abdullah Maute. Most of their soldiers come from MILF (yes - Moro Islamic Liberation Front) - an Islamic separatist group that has been in peace talks with the government since 2014. Apparently many of them don't like the prospect of peace all that much. -
2017-05-30 at 11:51 AM UTCIRAQ - Latest ISIS bomb attack was against an ice-cream parlour.

2017-05-30 at 7:11 PM UTCSYRIA - The US has stated they're switching to 'annihilation' tactics; that their primary goal is to kill Jihadis, no longer to drive them back or support other forces.
Their actions have rapidly become more and more reckless these last few weeks, presumably because their proxies on the ground, Al-Nusra and pals and even the Kurdish militias are plagued with infighting and stand no chance against the SAA without a unified front. ISIS in Syria, while supported by the US is not under their control and only shares the common goal of deposing Assad.
They've quietly and dramatically been stepping up attacks in Eastern Syria, and Israel has killed several SAA troops in the region with drone strikes - they look to be preparing for a land invasion.
*note to self: switchblade drones -

SYRIA - Oh yeah, the SAA has brought down a number of these recently - mostly with just small arms fire. They're the dildo-drones I posted about a while back.
They're apparently in active use with US SOF, and it appears they're being used extensively (tested, even?) in the north of Syria - specifically the Latakia region where the bulk of Russian assets are stationed. They can potentially be armed with a single small missile (considering the size of the drone I'd expect a missile of that size would probably only be useful for assassinations unless a chemical warhead is used. I don't believe it'd be able to carry a HEAT warhead capable of destroying armor) but there doesn't appear to be any indication that the units brought down were armed. -

Apparently Turkey's come out with a suicide drone that has virtually the same design... I suspect it's licensed and rebranded. -

A lot is happening now.
1. The SDF are at the gates of Raqqa-proper and preparing to attack, ostensibly now armed with US mortars and anti-armor weaponry.
2. The US have airdropped leaflets along southern SAA positions warning them to keep at least 55km away from the Al-Tanf Jordanian border crossing; essentially telling them that they will not be allowed to control their own borders. The SAA is having none of it.
3. Rebel groups in the East are reporting that shipments of US weapons have dramatically increased in order to attempt to stop the SAA from making it to the Iraq border.
4. There's been a massive rise in weapons originating from Israel being found at retaken rebel positions.
Given these details and indications from the last few posts, a ground operation (or some other massively increased military commitment) appears immininent. -
