they had to take people away in ambulances it scared them so bad. Today we just laugh at shit because the world today is evil but back in the day people were very religious.
Well no, probably not. People are desensitized to things these days, but honestly it's kinda gay that people reacted this way to The Exorcist. -
2023-08-15 at 5:54 PM UTCI had never heard that before so I went to INVESTIGATE.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/noleqn/part_of_the_notoriety_of_1973s_the_exorcist_are/The reactions do seem to be real; at the movie's release, Time interviewed a theater manager that estimated an average of "four blackouts and six episodes of vomiting" per screening, and another manager said "my janitors are going bananas wiping up the vomit". A review noted "you couldn't even get near the sink" of the bathroom after the show.
lol what a bunch of WEAKLINGS -

I mean, I sort of get, and I don't. I can watch stuff that makes me squeamish, but the Exorcist had horrible cinematography and special effects. Granted it was 1973, but still. If you're a devoutly religious person with peculiar sensitivities, I'm not sure why'd you'd be subjecting yourself to a horror movie about exorcism.

I didn’t know that’s one of his flicks ..have no choice but to watch now
But gonna watch them ALL!!
Awesome :)
I have a soft spot for him too. People rag on him, but there is something comical and great about his movies. The Happening is one of my favorites. -

Kinda makes me wonder if this was a common occurrence during other horror movies of the time, and it was just sort of a psychological phenomenon of sorts. Placebo, if you will.
I understand we're far more desensitized these days but it's still difficult to grasp that that many people during that time were that sensitive to a movie that rrally wasnt THAT shocking or bizarre. I can understand some isolated incidents.
I kinda wish it was like that today lol. It would make me happy to go to new horror movies with the anticipation that I might genuinely faint or vomit or have a panic attack from the sheer TERROR of the film.
Instead Im relegated to sitting expressionless eating Mac and cheese watching cartels skin people alive.
So sad. -
2023-08-15 at 6:51 PM UTCMY life like a horror movie starring you.
-
2023-08-15 at 6:56 PM UTCremember when that lady had a heart attack seeing a passion of the christ and everyone said she was just so moved by the movie that she just clenched up her aorta and stroked out and died in the theater.
i'm like she's 69 years old and a heavy smoker and had a heart attack during a movie while gorging herself on popcorn and coca cola, shocker! -
2023-08-15 at 7:22 PM UTCIt says she was 56 and didnt have any pre-existing health conditions. Funny that it was during the crucifixion scene.

With rampant socially acceptable mental illness and all the evangelical MAGA’s running around I’d think these flicks would increase the number of psychotic breaks, or exorcisms depending on their political and/or religious persuasions. -

I think it is like that today, but you're a psychobby who watches too much gore and is definitely desensitized. The most recent movie I heard that made people react this way was Crimes of the Future. I haven't watched it bc I don't like body horror and would probably be depressed and cry for three days. -
2023-08-15 at 7:47 PM UTChey hey hey now I don't watch too much gore. I just check in from time to time to see if there's any new BANGERS. XD
I'lll have to check out this Crimes of the Future you speak of. Hadn't heard of it. I don't particularly LIKE body horror either like I haven't even seen SAW 4-9 or whatever. Did you ever see Hard Candy?
I'm looking for more movies that make me feel like genuinely uneasy or uncomfortable. Have you seen Creep and Creep 2? Good times.
-
2023-08-15 at 7:56 PM UTCI did see Hard Candy, but I'm having a hard time remembering anything about it other than Elleniot Page.
I didn't see the Creep movies. -
2023-08-15 at 8:04 PM UTCIts the one where she baits a child molester and then does...things..to him.
Add the Creep movies to your list please. Well, at least just the first one. If its not your cup of tea then whatever but you gotta at least check out the first one. Blessings. Also I know its stupid to build up a movie and I'm not saying its some mind blowing thing its just peculiar enough that I like to recommend it.
Plus you probably like Mark Duplass and he's p cool. -

I think I saw both Creep movies but I only thought one was really funny. I think the one where he told the guy from Craigslist he had cancer. Idk if that was the first or second. -
2023-08-15 at 8:08 PM UTCWhat are good recent releases?

idk random suggestion - The Lodge (2019)
That's a good question. A lot of times they have to be funny for me to like them like Chucky, and Jennifers Body. But not always. I like some of Rob Zombies movies but some I don't. I liked his Halloween movies, Lords of Salem, but hated like everything else he did.
Christine is my favorite old movie. I will look up the lodge but recommend some based on those.
