East Ohio Derailment

This actually happened a few days ago but I assumed from the lack of media coverage (probably due to balloon-related trauma) that they'd gotten it under control. Apparently not. It seems that somehow the main engine disconnected from the cars and moved away safely, but the cars jumped the track and crashed into a diesel storage/production facility, creating the risk of both a major explosion and the release of hazardous chemicals.

About 50 cars derailed in East Palestine at about 9 p.m. Friday as a train was carrying a variety of products from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania, rail operator Norfolk Southern said. No injuries to crew, residents or first responders have been reported.

"Within the last two hours, a drastic temperature change has taken place in a rail car, and there is now the potential of a catastrophic tanker failure which could cause an explosion with the potential of deadly shrapnel traveling up to a mile."

It's been widely reported that some of the cars contain hazardous materials but they've been quiet about what those actually are - an emergency worker apparently let on that their major concern is vinyl chloride, which if heated to a point where it could rupture its storage container would cause an explosion that'd create a cloud of extremely toxic and corrosive acid far larger than the one mile they're evacuating

Fire Chief's effectively confirmed, he's made a statement that catastrophic failure will result in "hydrogen chloride & phosgene gas" being released into the atmosphere

i was wondering why are the palestinians have so much money to have so much diesel.

"americans" are so uncreative that they name their places after others places they saw on a map.

The governor says they are doing a "controlled release" at 3:30 EST, less than an hour from now. Who knows what the hell that means

Shipping hazardous and explosive chemicals through a heavily populated area should earn you a mandatory 20-year prison term.

Numerous lawsuits have already been filed against the company responsible. They are already running other trains again too.

there was rougly one million pounds (450 tonnes) of Vinyl Chloride on the train, which they drained into a ditch and burned off with (magnesium?) flares.

this is because when exposed to ambient temperatures, vinyl chloride rapidly degrades into hydrochloric acid vapor and phosgene gas, neither of which is ideal but phosgene is orders of magnitude more toxic. burning the VC at over 450 degrees celsius reduces the amount of phosgene created in the reaction; industrial disposal of the stuff is meant to be done at around 2000 degrees in a sealed oven, not with road flares in an open ditch.

so nobody is sure how much phosgene was released and over how wide an area. only very basic environmental testing has been done, and only inside 1 mile of the derailment. massive fish kills guarantee surface-water contamination, locals are concerned about wellwater. aside from the chickens, there have been reports of larger animals being found dead (dogs, foxes) several days later but as far as I've seen they haven't had a cause of death attributed.
