anonymous money laundering by the way

I used to use dudes on localbitcoins who had me make cash deposits into their account at a local credit union. No ID etc needed for deposits, only withdrawals. Usually was done in like half an hour.

And yeah just use Coinbase, less fuss

selling price is the determinant of worth.

Actually it was worth 1 bitcoin when 1 bitcoin came out

Bitcoin made a lot of really shitty "end the fed!" people incredibly wealthy.

bitcoin didn't do anything, they made themselves wealthy

Wasn't referring to worth, was referring to cost. $0.

it cost energy to "mine" bitcoins.

the cost is never 0. the price might, but never the cost.

No. When BitCoin first came out, they were totally free.

you still had to find suitable hashes. it was a lot easier than it is today because it was less particular about what hashes were valid (the difficulty level), but it still required computation and therefore electricity.

when I got into it the meta was this

the entire network was hobbyists, giga nerds and a very small number of dedicated corporate like the earliest exchange rypto scummers or pirates or whatever, I think the chinese were really the first to make the "fill a warehouse with graphic card mod rigs and pump ryptos" into a "business model" and eveyone else has just been copying them

which is why the market crashed, too much doing the same thing, no innovation. YOu can't just do the same thing forever, that's why everything is fucked, that's why this shit is designed the way it is so that you still use it when this happens, Don't "invest" in crypto, it might go up or down who knows but it's not a speculative security, it's the future. Invest in THE FUTURE and build it

There was no mining involved. BitCoins were downloaded free of charge.

they still had to be 'mined', you can't offer them for download unless they're on the blockchain, and they can't get on the blockchain without a valid block hash.

    Here's the very first hash:

    000000000019d6689c085ae165831e934ff763ae46a2a6c172b3f1b60a8ce26f

the hash had to contain ten leading zeros to be valid. that took some computational effort, but nothing compared to the effort required today.

you can solve the equations used for the SHA encryption by hand but a computer can do it faster
