Mechanic said the downstream catalytic is disintegrating and stalling the car out at idle. Estimated $500 to fix it if he could get the part.
Took it home and it drives like shit in the rain and the bumper started falling off which I had to re-zip tie at a gas station.
Called a muffler shop and was quoted $350 to replace the downstream catalytic but the guy said usually cars wont run barely at all once they go out and was surprised I had it to highway speeds and it only stalls at idle... He said he would do a back pressure test for free to tell me if that's what it is or not.
I guess a free test isn't a bad place to start.
Im going to be so fucking pissed if a can of throttle body cleaner fixes the damn car...
The youth in me tells me that since I have the time and a place to work on it that I should at least give it a shot. I can probably fix the bumper better than zip ties and slap some used tires on it for fairly cheap. A can of throttle booty cleaner isn't very much and not trying to fix it and just assuming it's fucked is dumb. What is your opinion and what would you do?
$1500 - car $70 - tags and registration $160 - insurance $60 - mechanic (who didn't fix it)
$1790 total. I doubt I can get that back as it sits now but insurance isn't due again for another month and $80 bet I can get it running better in that time frame is a bet I'm willing to take.
I'll throw a couple hundred bucks at it if I have to or if someone tells me the catalytic is in fact the problem and gives me a decent price I might fix it.
But in the meantime if someone came along and offered me what I paid for the car I would sell it just to get rid of it.
Going to wait until a nicer day to wash it up and take some pictures to post it for sale and whichever way this goes I'll be happy so long as I recoup most of what I have in it.
At the end of the day if I didn't buy the Lancer I would have probably spent $1500 on fucking carpet tiles or some stupid shit like that and had I invested it in the stock market I'd be out way more than just a couple hundred bucks anyways.
I tried making ONE video of it dying and it wasn't dying very well.
Anyways, here are 3 videos mostly of me bitching but I'll include a couple timestamps.
Video 1: I assumed it would just hurry up and die but it wasn't cooperating. At the 45 second mark I find a doughnut.
Video 2: Annoyed it won't die I drive it around my parking lot and it does cut out at the 59 second mark.
Video 3: I pop the hood and hope it dies so you can watch the engine struggle but it just keeps running like a bitch.
Im calling the muffler guy back and scheduling that back pressure test tomorrow to see if that results in any findings.
Update: in the time it has taken to upload the videos I called the muffler shop and they said they are closed tomorrow but to come in on Thursday. I'll have to check my bank account and see if I can afford to have a new cat put on Thursday or if I will have to wait until next week but either way I'm still going to go in for the free back pressure test.

It's not the converter. Take that air box apart and see if you have a mouse nest in there. I would clean the MAF sensor and throttle body real good then remove and clean the battery terminals. If that don't work I would start looking for vacuum leaks.
The following users say it would be alright if the author of this
post didn't die in a fire!

I've had the mass airflow sensor literally completely repair a car once I cleaned it. Snagged one from a junkyard the next time I went and never had a problem again

youtube into how to adjust your car ecu to function without cat converters. and feed your cats to your girlfriends dogs.
Ya but you need them to pass emission tests. Now if its an older car with a down stream converter thats not monitored you can just hollow them out no problem.
