2022-01-08 at 1:04 AM UTCHey Alder what do you think about France? They face price hikes of 30-40% in electricity by February. They want to do something involving EDF, the French 80% majority state owned electricity company. I'm assuming they'll nationalise it and pay off the 20% private owners, and then lower electricity costs that way. The Presidential Elections are in April. They previously had plans to nationalise the nuclear part of EDF and spin off the wind, solar and hydro parts. If they do nationalise could it be a windfall for investors? They were previously talking about paying a premium over market prices for stonk.

I haven't been paying a lot of attention to France but I can't imagine them nationalising energy production in any meaningful way. I'd suspect they've got similar problems as Germany where they're rapidly shutting down coal, gas and even nuclear plants in favour of 'green' energy that isn't as reliable as they'd hoped.

more socialism, not necessary a bad thing either way
Originally posted by aldra nevermind, you're right, I just looked at the actual prices.
initial riots were over the subsidy - LPG was at around 15c a litre, the subsidy was removed and it went up to 30 or so, then the government walkit it back to around 12c.
the subsidies are back in place, now it's just another general anti government colour revolution (they're trying to use the momentum to get subsidies on food now), which explains why CSTO was so quick to send in a taskforce

The whole of Western Europe has been close to the edge all winter. Despite the bullshit about wind not being worthwhile we get a lot of our energy from it - for instance it's at least 1/2 Irelands overall production. But the problem is when the wind isn't blowing.
And there is this whole weird gas shortage - and I've been following it day by day like a crazed horse gambler down to his last fiver, but haven't been able to understand it, apparently Russia is delivering what was ordered, but the Europeans aren't ordering any more. I don't get it. Have the Russians cut off the Europeans, or have the Europeans simply false flagging themselves by not ordering more gas? I haven't seen anything either way which I trust.
It did seem to me at one point like the Russians were having some difficulty meeting demand, which they were too macho to admit. But strange stories.
Now there is a "flotilla" of US ships bringing Europe gas, but will it be enough? Probably for this winter, yes, just about. Apart from in the Balkans it looks like, despite declining electricity production capacity and increasing demand Europe will scrape by the winter without rolling blackouts, which is about the worst possible thing that could have happened, as now we won't get new capacity in 2021, and, unless we have a major economic downturn in 2022 (which is actually likely imo) we will have a major shortfall in electricity next winter.
Germany has gone mad, that sort of craziness they do all the time. Big energy crisis underway. All Europe is short on energy, and oil and gas production capacity will be running low in the next 10-20 years no matter what. €200 oil, you'll be glad to get it. Want to get rich? Invest now.
Hopefully Europe goes wind + nuclear for electricity. It's the only option. -

The core problem is that supply is available, but EU governments are refusing to sign medium-long-term contracts presumeably for political reasons. They're only buying at spot prices, prices shoot up when they buy a lot, then they refuse to pay the spot prices and end up with a shortage.

The problem isn't with supply, it's with negotiating contracts. Buying US LPG for twice the price fucks the consumer but lines the pockets of the political class.

moving towards completely 'green' energy, nuclear is a necessary stopgap if they're going to shut down all the coal and gas plants. it's insane that they're shutting the nuclear plants down for not being 'clean' enough; there's too much of a shortfall in energy output.
I think tidal and geothermal plants have the most potential though; too much maintenance and exotic materials go into making wind and solar work -
2022-01-08 at 2:03 AM UTCI know Russia is going full Soviet when it comes to reactor construction abroad. The area around Chernobyl is beautiful, has lots of land, cheap labour, and has ample water for cooling, ideal for a nuclear park, besides political considerations it is perfect for the construction of a massive nuclear plant of 10 gigawatts plus that pipes the electricity to Germany via high voltage DC.

lol, they're really upset that the riots are under control. Blinken is 'demanding to know why the Kazakh President called for CSTO assistance' (without asking for permission)Speaking about Nur-Sultan's decision to call in allied peacekeepers, Blinken told CNN that Washington had “real questions” about “why they felt compelled to call in this organization that Russia dominates,” insisting “we’re asking for clarification on that.”

also the Fat Boy Rocketman has lost lots of weight. clearly showing signs of heart problems related to him being overweight. this may mean he is working out now getting in better physical shape which only raises testosterone. he will soon be challenging the US with new Glide Missiles some of you are laughing about. laughing if he even has them.

https://tass.com/world/1385177The Kazakh Ministry of Health has denied information circulated in social media about the seizure of a military biological lab near Almaty by unidentified people.
"This is not true. The facility is being protected," the ministry’s press service said.
Social media reports maintained that specialists in chemical protection suits were working near the lab, so, a leak of dangerous pathogens could have occurred.
the US runs a bio lab (like the one in Wuhan - viruses, bacteria etc.) in Almaty and there have been a lot of local reports of a group in CERN hazmat gear removing materials from it.
the Kazakh government is denying it, I haven't found any photos or videos yet. -
