If you hack up a green glob of gunk and spit it into a handkerchief…the handkerchief retains 90%+ of the green menace…along with whatever viruses/bacteria/fungus etc etc is encapsulated in said gunk…
Your handkerchief stopped 90% of said gunk from being transmitted. Mask work the same way…they don't fully stop transmission but they reduce it SIGNIFICANTLY.
That's like 3rd grade science and you really don't need to cough up into a handkerchief to figure that out.

With an airborne virus like a coronavirus, the phlegm and droplets don't matter. The viral particles are so infinitesimal they get suspended in the air itself. Every breath the infected person exhales contains billions of coronavirus particles. And the vapor cloud is also mobile. It can remain in place, or shift position, for up to 30 minutes. That means you only have to breath a few particles of those billions of particles and you are infected. The phlegm and droplets are nothing more than an afterthought; it's immaterial to the scope and ease of the infection. The only way you won't contract the disease is to stop breathing. -
