How do ya'll feel about killing?
-
2017-02-24 at 12:02 AM UTCI've personally slaughter hundreds of goats and cows and chickens (all combined). Probably thousands of insects. Hundreds of fish too. That's about it tho.

That's a good question; I describe my moral position as ahimsa because it best fits my position as it literally means 'do no harm'' but, regardless of what the Gita says, my ethical position is a secular one and thus I do not subscribe to the religious teachings of any old book that might agree with me on this. -
2017-02-26 at 2:20 PM UTCI got over 9000 confirmed kills in 'Nam.

well, someone's gotta do it
but really though i think the people who work in big meat packing plants like that become fucked in the head after a certain time i know i would probably adopt a different mindset after eviscerating thousands of carcasses -

He hasn't yet

I'm actually serious, btw.
If I caught a mouse in a no kill trap there's not much I could do with him, I live in a city. If I let him go outside he'd probably just end up back inside, if he didn't it'd be some other building. And if a mouse go into the space behind my cupboard somehow it should be able to get it, it shouldn't starve, just go somewhere else. One hopes the bar on those traps has enough force to break a mouse's spine or neck and kill it relatively quickly. The alternatives being poison or glue traps both seem significantly worse in terms of suffering.
I thought about the issue a fair amount when I was setting out traps, felt kinda bad trying to kill a mouse for just doing what it needs to do to survive, tried to think of alternatives. Ultimately though the risk to human health of a large mouse/rat population under urban conditions is significant enough that it can't really be ignored, we can't really coexist and we're the more morally relevant animal. We should probably put them into extinction if possible, or eliminate wild populations, better to kill a generation of rodents than perpetuate an unavoidable violent struggle tantamount to killing the same number every couple of years. -

2017-04-09 at 10:38 AM UTCyou funded the killing so you have to accept your part in it. you might not have pressed the button or even agreed with it. but by paying taxes you enabled it.
