3D printers are never a waste of money...they print money..in the form of things you can sell or repair parts you don't have to buy.
Of course if the user is inept and fails the basics then you lose money..but that's not the printers fault.

Do I need to buy a special 220 plug for the computer or can I just strip the wires and shove them in there?

you can just strip em and shove em in. Though getting US AT power supply would probably be the best option. Again check under that label to see if there is a 120v/240v switch.

There's a switch right on the back of the power supply to switch between 110-115v and 220-230v.
