ISIS is getting crushed slowly in Mosul - Iraqi forces are progressing slowly to minimise damage to infrastructure and civilian casualties, US is bombing somewhat indiscriminantly because they have very little intelligence on the ground and they want to finish up so they can rush to Raqqa

it's a race to Raqqa now because the SAA need to crush ISIS so they can tell Turkey to GTFO, and the US want to take it for themselves so they can declare an autonomous region in the north to use as a satellite military outpost and a large slice of land they can run their gas pipeline through without having to deal with Assad.

US have been deploying more and more of their own troops, something like 4k marines last I checked because they're running out of proxies on the ground. the so-called FSA can't even pretend not to be al-qaeda anymore and are openly being controlled by the Turks, who are trying to annex northern Syria and crush the Kurds.

The SDF (Syrian Kurd groups) are fragmenting more and more; Barzani is in bed with the US but more and more of the group are ceding land and weapons to the SAA. there's likely a deal in place to grant their regions greater autonomy as long as they remain part of the Syrian state, as well as the common goal of pushing the Turks out. that and I suspect many of the groups have a distaste for being constantly betrayed by he west and Barzani's own crimes, like allowing or even enabling the genocide of the Yazidi toward the beginning of the war
