Web advertising is neither cost effective nor effective period, the nature of the site make affiliate schemes pretty much infeasible and it's really kind of seedy bullshit to start with. Believe it or not there's some evidence flyering or graffiti has been semi-effective. Back on zoklet, when I was in highschool, I put the url on those post office sticker things and just slapped like 50 of them in random places, bathrooms, under a bridge, light posts at eye level and in the following month there were some registrations from my area, although I never confirmed that. On the whole it's kind of a shitty strategy because you know, committing crimes and whatnot. What remains is SEO and word of mouth, which is more or less the current strategy. Some level of order/shit containment needs to be in place for search-growth which ehhh, I give out a 24 hour ban and people flip shit so not a simple task.
Despite this the user base actually is, very slowly, growing. So whatever, I'd still host site if it wasn't, honestly each new person posting is a little more in hardware, a little more in my time to moderate. I didn't put up the site to claim I own some big sprawling community, I run it because I want a place to shitpost after work while I'm getting drunk. -
