   linux is just the kernel, there's shitloads of google and other code (a lot of it closed source, specifically around the radio drivers) supporting it. there are a few 'privacy-centric' android builds but they're rather limited. I want to try out a cell device that runs debian/ubuntu but I'm not sure it's really a usable platform for an always-on mobile device

   I just feel repulsed by any Microsoft shit on a Linux device. Not just any nasty corporate bloatware, but the most evil kind, preinstalled.
   
   Also Ubuntu is garbage, it's literally marketed towards niggers in Africa. Back in the day people would laugh at you for using it.

   it's also one of the few distros that can both be easily built for ARM and also has a decent multitouch driver/stack, or at least it was the last time I checked

   Most phones are using ARM processors, not really meant for having a lot of apps. I hope you're being sarcastic because some OS are specifically meant to be used with minimal GUI.
