Anthony Sowell, the serial killer known as the Cleveland Strangler, bound, gagged and strangled his first victim when she tried to leave his apartment. After he assaulted her, the woman, who was three months pregnant at the time, was able to flee his apartment through a window and flag down neighbors for help. Sowell was convicted a year later for attempted rape, and he was released early from his 15-year sentence in 2005. He went on to murder 11 women before his capture in 2009. When police searched his home, they found several bodies buried in crawl spaces as well as the basement and backyard. Two decomposing bodies were also found on the living room floor. According to the coroner, the majority of the victims were strangled. On August 12, 2011, he was sentenced to death. Sowell is currently sitting on death row at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution.
