   Personally I think it was a great movie. They should have just cut out the whole batman connection and focused on a failed comedian going insane. It would have been just as good. The gritty 80's feel to it made it perfect though.

    There are literally an endless amount of Batmans. DC has had the multiverse thing going on for a while now. This is just one of many Jokers. Some universes have multiple jokers. Some have no Batman. Some most definitely have neither. There's one universe where Gotham doesn't even have crime and the Wayne family wasn't corrupt, so no Batman ever appeared.
    
    They have already stated that the universe in this movie is a separate universe. Similar to the Venom film being in a separate universe from the Spiderman movies.

    The Joker is a particular character, there are different renditions of him but this one didn't feel like that character at all.

    The mentally ill portrayal of Joker is absolutely 100% within the norm for most Joker depictions. His aptitude for violence. Being an outcast. The jokes. It's all there, it's just in a more realistic context. He has so many different backgrounds and the canon is that he lies about it anyway.
