I don't care about making PC ports of the games. It's pretty cool technically but yeah, it's obviously illegal.

I think the best projects are the ones based around the hardware of the actual machine. I have an NES for development purposes but I didn't grow up in that time. I grew up with the N64 as my first real console and I played almost every game for it. It's a good machine that can do some cool things. It gets a lot of flak but I think it has some of the best games.

My favorite is Paper Mario which I would really like to see reverse engineered. You can do some really cool things with the tools available but there are limitations because you don't have access to the code. I think this game has a lot more potential for mods because it's an RPG with a simplistic design and a lot of depth. The only reason there hasn't been any interest in full scale hacks of the game is because of how difficult it is.

unless they start making really good rom hacks for these things on the level of super mario world on snes they can reverse enginner all they want and make even it accessible or a levele ditor but if no one cares or uses it and just keeps making smw rom hacks then its pointless imo. the desire and talnt needs to be there for free for someone to do that.

You can build an entirely new game from the assets and engine

Lol, how the fuck did they extract this?

    I'm legit curious.

I play emulated games all the time but have no idea how they work.

Why all that data for one vertex? I would have guessed it's a polygon, the first and last items at the top level seem to be a position and 4 channel color respectively

this is way more impressive than what star trek posted and got excited by:

Not really, multiple groups have remade Mario 64 in modern engines. It's not that difficult to do and they always get the physics wrong because they are amateur coders.

Mario is a physics based platformer so graphics and crazy vertexs don't really do much when the entire point of the game is being able to do crazy maneuvers by jumping off the flat polygon surfaces that makes up the levels. That's why these aren't playable because you can't do all the skips in bowsers first level. You probably can't even play most of the levels normally without them adding platforms or changing things because they can't code the proper physics.

Like wall jumping I never see that in the 3D remakes.

im also an amateur grafikd esigner wnd a rtist so does thwt mean i always must get it wrong? does being amateur at anything mean it always must be wrong or worse? considering both anna spysz and star treka re self trained coders does that mean theyre amateurs or get it wrong?

also didnt you claim the rom hacks are better than actually n64 earlier in the thread as youra rgument why we should be excited in this news? now you admit it sucks or the physics are off and this womt change anything in the entire gaming scene despite star trek being somexcited about it?

    Uh, not really.
