I do compete with a lot of desi immigrants for my job although I don't feel particularly threatened, there are plenty of smart people in that part of the world but most of them were born into a fundamentally different socio-economic class than me.
My post was mostly a Kafka joke though, maybe jokes based on the translation don't work on native speakers.

There's a big difference between educated immigrants and those refugees.
If you are a 20 year old student in Pakistan or wherever, sure, it's possible to adapt but not if you are a 40 year old car mechanic with 6 children who has never seen a German car that was made past the 80s.

Kafka's most famous book, at least in the english speaking world is Der Process, young german man is charged with a crime and faces an incomprehensible bureaucracy. Mostly those were just plot points, he has to jump through hoops to get a lawyer to take on his case, visites court offices which are literally suffocating, has to deal with an italian business associate without a good grasp of the language and like a quarter of the book is the dialog between the protagonist and a priest which a lot of people skip because it has no obvious relationship to anything else in the book. The last line spoken by the protagonist after he's executed without an explanation is "like a dog"
