Edit; actually, I got infections because I didn't use one at all. I never asked zoklet before I started and the person who shot me up the first time didn't do itCotton fever rarely requires medical treatment but is sometimes warranted if the high fever does not break within a few hours of the onset.
you can heat the cotton, boil it, etc, if youre worried, ive never known anyone that was hospitalized for it though.
theres also 100% cotton gauze at heb that are dirt cheap and pre-sterilized since theyre meant to be put on wounds. the medical isles are a gold mine for lots of stuff

or you could basify till the pH is nine, extract with chloroform(or an easier to get less toxic solvent)and a separatory funnel, leaving the majority of crap behind, then bring the pH back down closer to 7 and you wont need a filtter.
